Chapter Singluar and plural for students

Singular:-

A noun that denotes only one person or thing is said to be singular in number.
Example:- boy, pen, man etc.

Plural:-

A noun that denotes more than one person or thing is said to be plural in number.
Example- boys , pens, men etc



How to form plural noun

1) most noun from their plural by adding -s to the singular.

Singular        plural
Boy                Boys
Eye                 Eyes
Ear                 Ears


2) nouns ending in a hissing sound (i.e., ending in s , ss ,sh ,ch, x or z ) from their plural by adding -es to the singular.


Singular.         Plural
Match.               Matches
Box.                    Boxes
Class .                 Classes
Dish.                   Dishes


3) if the noun ends in y and the y has a consonant before it, there plural is formed by changing y into -ies.


Singular.               Plural
Army.                     Armies
Fly .                          Flies
Baby .                     Babies



4) if the noun and in y and y has a vowel before it, then plural is formed in the normal way by adding -s to the singular 


Singular.             Plural
Key.                      Keys
Valley.                  Valleys
Monkey.             Monkeys



5)noun endings in -f or -fe generally formed a plural by changing the -fe or -f into -ves.


Singular.         Plural
Leaf .                Leaves
Life.                   Lives
Wolf .                 Wolves



6) some noun ending in -f from their plural in the normal way by adding -s to the singular.


Singular.           Plural
Belief.               Beliefs
Gulf .                 Gulfs
Dwarf.               Dwarfs



7)noun ending in -o, if they have a consonant before them, generally from their plural by adding -es to the singular.


Singular.           Plural
Hero.                Heroes
Volcano.           Volcanoes


8)some nouns ending in -o from their plural in the normal way by adding -s to the singular 

Singular .          Plural
Bamboo .         Bamboos
Photo .              Photos


9) a few noun from their plural by changing if the inside vowel.

Singular.            Plural
Woman.             Women
Mouse .               Mice
Goose .                Geese



10) some nouns from their plural ending in -en.

Singular.           Plural
Ox .                   Oxen
Child.               Children



11)compound nouns from their plural in the following manner.

12)some words have the same form in the singular and plurals.

13) certain nouns are used only in the plural.
